The Hanover/Lebanon area of New Hampshire is home to about 12,568 people, according to the census poll of 2000. The town charter was signed by Colonial Benning Wentworth in 1761, and it was formed along with a number of other little towns dotting the Connecticut River. Today, it is known as the home to the Dartmouth Medical School and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. The town was the original site of the Indian Charity School, which was a precursor to Dartmouth College. The early township consisted of machine shops, a tannery, furniture makers, and textile mills. Today, there is a large shopping mall in the area, along with numerous hiking trails, rec areas, swimming pools, and sports fields. It is also the home to the large branches of such firms as Merck, Novell, Tele Atlas, and Microsoft.
