For a “hands-on” journey into Oklahoma’s past and historic territorial life, visit the Historic Harn Homestead & 1889ers Museum. Located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the museum sits on original Land Run property, and features a territorial farm, a one-room school house, a Victorian home, the 1889ers Museum and the traditional Oklahoma settlers’ values of waste-not want-not. Originally purchased as the William Fremont Harn Gardens, Inc., the 160 acre property was purchased by Mr. Harn and his wife Alice sometime around the Land Run of April 1889. Later inherited by the Harns’ niece Florence Wilson, who would ultimately donate the Homestead with wishes that it be used for children’s programming and education, the Homestead respects her wishes by offering a wide variety of educational programming for school children and the chance to see what life was like for pioneers living and working in the area over 100 years ago. A great historical attraction for kids of all ages, general admissions to the Homestead cost $5 per guest, or $4 for seniors. The grounds are open from 10am-4pm Monday to Friday, and 1-hour guided tours are given daily at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

While in Oklahoma City, also be sure to visit Heritage Hills, once known as Harndale. Also developed by Mr. Harn, some of the City’s oldest homes are in this neighborhood, and most are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Other nearby attractions include the Overholser Mansion, the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, the State Capitol, the Martin Park Nature Center, the Myriad Botanical Gardens and the Oklahoma City Zoo.
