Though the original purpose of Truman's visits was to relax and recover from the pressures of his job, the Little White House eventually was used for more and more official purposes, including to accommodate foreign leaders and hold negotiations.

The property had originally been part of a local naval base that was later shut down during the 1970s as submarine technologies shifted and the naval base was no longer necessary.
