One of the most important and dynamic leaders of the United States, Harry Truman, didn't start out raised by other world leaders. No, his formative years were spent right in Independence, Missouri, right on the family farm, and he even returned to Independence after serving as president.

Currently, visitors interested in history as well as the life and times of our 32nd president can visit The Harry S. Truman National Historic Site, which preserves both Truman's personal longtime home, as well as his family's farm. While the family farm is a short drive from Independence, The Wallace House, Truman's former home, is right in the center o f town.

Located on North Delaware Street, this grand and regal house was the home of Harry Truman and his wife from 1919 until 1972, when he wasn't taking up residence in The White House. Truman's wife's grandfather actually built the house, helping young Harry out, since he was attempting to get a menswear business going in downtown, and didn't quite have the finances together to support his new bride.

Despite the time spent in Washington, Truman returned to this home whenever he wasn't obligated to live in D.C. due to politics. His daughter was born in the house, and the house was also used as his study and office after the official Truman Library was opened.

Visitors interested in this rare president, one who had a home that wasn't actually his, can stop by daily for a guided tour of the premises. The house recently underwent renovations, so before heading over, it is best to call ahead and confirm that the hours are still from nine in the morning until four in the afternoon.
