Harvard University, located in Cambridge Massachusetts, was established in September of 1636 by the colonial legislature of Massachusetts. It is said to be the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States, and its first and oldest corporation. Harvard University is named for its first benefactor, John Harvard, a young minister who left his library and half his estate to the newly-founded institution. Today it is an internationally renowned university of Ivy League standing and NCAA Division I status, with close to 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

Although its original purpose was to train Puritan ministers, the university now is comprised of 11 principal academic units: ten academic degree-awarding faculties and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. It is the alma matter of famous graduates such as President Barack Obama, authors Henry David Thoreau, and T.S. Eliot, composer Leonard Bernstein, cellist Yo Yo Ma, comedian and writer Conan O´Brien, and actors Tommy Lee Jones and Natalie Portman, just to name a few. Not to mention, it is affiliated with 75 Nobel Prize winners.

The campus offers many educational activities and lectures, such as free student-guided walking tours of its many historical landmarks like Massachusetts Hall (1720) and the Widener Memorial Library (1913-1915). It is also home to the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, the Harvard Museum of Natural History, the Harvard Art Museum, the Arnold Arboretum, the Harvard Forest, and the largest academic library in the world.

Cambridge, the home of not only Harvard, but famous institutes of higher learning like Cambridge University and MIT, offers a range of local accommodation options, some of which include the Sheraton Commander Hotel, the Harvard Square Hotel, the Inn at Harvard – Cambridge, the Boston Park Plaza Hotel and Towers, and the Omni Parker House.
