Harvey Milk Plaza

Hotels near Harvey Milk Plaza, San Francisco, United States .

Harvey Milk Plaza in the Castro district of San Francisco honors the first openly gay candidate to be elected to the city’s Board of Supervisors. Harvey Milk paved the way for gay rights and activism not only in San Francisco but throughout the entire country. An enormous rainbow flag flies above the plaza to commemorate Milk’s life and legacy. At the base of the flagpole is a list of past and present openly gay and lesbian officials of the city and state.

Harvey Milk did not even have the chance to serve an entire year of his term before he was shot in 1978 at San Francisco’s City Hall. Following the assassination was the White Night Riot in 1979, when supporters of the gay community forcibly entered City Hall and set fire to the lobby and several police cars.

The plaza is located at the southwest corner of Market and Castro Streets in the Castro district of San Francisco, California. For more history and background of the Harvey Milk story, visit http://thecastro.net/milk/.

Hotels in the area include the Hilton San Francisco Union Square, the Westin St. Francis and the Holiday Inn Civic Center San Francisco.
