The Hawaii Superferry was a Hawaiian transportation company which offered a ferry service between Honolulu Harbor on Oahu island and Kahului Harbor on the island of Maui. The ferry did transport both passengers and vehicles. Superferry operated two vessels, the Alakai, which arrived in the harbor on June 30, 2007 and the Huakai, which came later on in 2009. Both are aluminum hulled catamarans. The company itself was founded in 2003. Recent issues have come to light regarding the ferry’s environmental impact. At the moment, the company has actually suspended service and filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. This means that it is unlikely to return to service.
