Standing as a National Memorial to Missing Children, the Hawkshaw Lagoon Memorial Park in Pensacola, Florida, was created by the Hawkshaw Lagoon Missing Children Memorial, Inc. non-profit organization. Stretching for a quarter of a mile along Pensacola Bay, it is also a nature park with a pedestrian bridge and observation deck traversing the lagoon. From there visitors can get an up-close look at the diversity of the lagoon’s plants, animals, bird and marine life. As the centerpiece of the park, the award-winning sculpture “The Sanctuary” stands in honor of lost or missing children everywhere. Pensacola, Florida, and the Hawkshaw Lagoon are important historical sites and visitors to the National Memorial to Missing Children should be sure to visit the nearby Seville Square Historic District. The earliest known settlement attempts on the North American continent were made here by the Spanish beginning around 1559. It was once a quaint seaport town built upon fishing, shipping and naval stores, and many settlers lived in homes along the bay. Some of the oldest homes in Florida still stand in this district.
