While a relatively new hospital, the Helen DeVos Children´s Hospital is the largest children´s hospital in Western Michigan and has the nation’s 10th largest neonatal center, with more than 1,200 babies admitted each year. The hospital was founded in 1973 when a neonatal intensive care unit opened at Butterworth Hospital. Fifteen years later, the pediatric intensive care unit was created and grew to include 190 beds and a wide range of services. The hospital boasts more than 150 physicians in 40 pediatric specialties and more than 7,600 inpatient admissions annually. There is a level I trauma center staffed 24 hours a day, Western Michigan´s only blood and bone marrow transplant program. The hospital also has a dialysis unit, and conducts almost 200,000 outpatients annually.

The motto of the hospital is “Caring for children and their families with compassion, excellence and innovation.” To fulfill this motto, the hospital is always expanding its reach, and in 2006, construction began for the new Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. With more than $103 million donated by the local community, this state-of-the-art hospital and teaching facility is set to open in early 2011.
