The whole world in one island. This is the official tagline of Helsinki Zoo and they tend to live up to the name. Located on Korkeasaari, the zoo was opened in 1889 and since then it has been one of the most visited tourist destinations in Finland. The most magnificent aspect of this place is its huge diversity and it’s not restricted to the flora and fauna. Every possible ecosystem is seen in this island; Tundra, rainforests, tropics, frigid mountain peaks, wetlands, etc. Thus, 150 or so animal species and over 1000 plant species are conserved and habituated in their natural environment rather than huddling them all together in a common ecosystem. Tourists get to see animals and plants native to African tropics, African deserts, Amazon forests, Indonesian jungles, Himalayan mountains, Asian forests, the Artics, etc. The zoo also has various undertakings towards ensuring the safety and integrity of the wildlife, especially the endangered species.
Spread over an area of 22 hectares and with various sections and sub sections, the zoo provides the tourists a full day’s worth of activities. Apart from this, a few times every year, “night walks” are arranged for the visitors so as to enable them to see the nocturnal animals. There are various ice cream and beverages kiosks, cafes, snack bars and proper full time restaurants, and also Korkeasaari and Safari shops selling souvenirs.
Being an island, it’s connected from nearby cities through boat service and also a bridge. It’s open all year round except on Christmas Eve and timings vary according to the season. A normal adult ticket costs Eur 7, but there are various other offers available.
