Aintree Racecourse

Aintree Racecourse is a racecourse located in Aintree, Liverpool, Merseyside, England. The course is the home venue of the Grand National steeplechase, one of the most famous races in the world. Steeplechasing at Aintree was introduced in 1839, though flat racing had taken place there for many years prior to this and is regarded as one of the most difficult of all courses to successfully complete, with 16 steeplechase fences including The Chair, Canal Turn and Becher's Brook. These are so infamous that even their names strike fear into the most professional of jockeys as all fences bar the water jump are covered with spruce unlike any other course in British national hunt racing. There are four other races taking place over the National fences: the Topham Chase (formerly known as the John Hughes Trophy Chase), the Fox Hunters' Chase at the Grand National meeting, the Grand Sefton Handicap Chase and Becher Handicap Chase in the November meeting. Within the large National course there is also the smaller Mildmay course containing hurdles and fences made of traditional national hunt material.
Beside the Grand National, there are other events held there such as: motor racing, music and golf. The British Grand Prix was staged there on five occasions, in 1955, 1957, 1959, 1961 and 1962 and also hosted 11 non-championship Formula 1 races, known as the Aintree 200. Michael Jackson performed there in front of 125,000 fans on September 11, 1988, as part of his Bad World Tour.
