Henbury
Henbury is a suburb of Bristol, England, situated about 8 km north-west of the city centre. It was at first a village in Gloucestershire. The Hazel Brook, a tributary of the River Trym, cuts through Henbury, and crosses Henbury Road in a small ford near the Toby Carvery pub. Henbury represents also the name of a council ward for Bristol City Council. This ward includes both Henbury and Brentry.
Henbury was first mentioned in late 7th century as Heanburg. The name is from the Old English “hean byrig”, which means “high fortified place”. It was also mentioned in the Domesday Book as Henberie.
The parish Church of St Mary the Virgin dates from approximately 13th century. The tower is also from the early 13th century. The churchyard houses the grave of Scipio Africanus.
Henbury also houses a relaxation spot- the Henbury Leisure Centre, home to a swimming pool, sports facilities and a gym.
Henbury Lodge Hotel Bristol offers visitors a country house hotel atmosphere within the city of Bristol with ample parking within the hotel grounds at affordable rates.
