Heraklion Archaeological Museum

Heraklion Archaeological Museum has a significant place among Greece museums due to its outstanding collection of artifacts from the Minoan civilisation. The Minoan period created one of the richest cultures in Cretan history. The museum is one of the greatest museums in Europe.

Crete Island, a treasure vault of archaeological findings, is the main focus of the exhibitions in Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Covering some 5,500 years of history, the Cretan antiquities on display date back from the Neolithic period to the Roman times. The collections include pottery, paintings, small sculptures, carved stone objects and seals. Notable are Minoan sarcophagi and the Giamalakis collection. All of which represent the diversity of the Cretan civilisation.

The building that houses the museum was constructed on the ruins of a Franciscan monastery that was destroyed in an earthquake in 1856. Due to restoration efforts, only a section of the museum accepts visitors from 8:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesdays to Sundays. It is also open on Mondays from 1:30-8 p.m.

Heraklion is the islandís capital and gives plenty of accommodation choices from city centre hotels offering fantastic harbour views to fabulous resorts along the coast, for travellers who wish to experience traditional Greek culture.
