Constituting the longest suspension bridge in Brazil, and having been the longest eyebar suspension bridge when it was inaugurated in 1926, the Hercilio Luz Bridge is a major panoramic attraction in Florianopolis, in the southern state of Santa Catarina. Connecting the capital city on an island a little less than a mile offshore with the mainland of the South American continent, the Hercilio Luz Bridge is named in honor of one of the more popular governors in the history of the state of Santa Catarina, Hercilio Luz.

The bridge was built over four years (from 1922-1926) by the American Bridge Company, who pioneered its eyebar suspension bridge design with this particular bridge in Brazil. The unique design of the bridge, and the fact that it is constantly lit up by artificial means during the year, mean that the Hercilio Luz Bridge really offers the daytime and nighttime skyline of Florianopolis a unique, charming touch.

Though the Hercilio Luz Bridge has been closed to traffic since the early 1990s, there has been a renovation project underway for the last few years, since 2006, to get the bridge back in operating conditions and open to the public (something that won't hurt the blossoming tourist economy of the Florianopolis area).
