Hermanus is the name of a village in South Africa named for a noble teacher, Hermanus Pieters, who taught the children of the Hermel-en-Aarde Valley during the 1800s. The teacher was often paid with sheep by the farmers who sent their children to him to be educated. Long after he died, the village, Hermanuspietersfontein, was founded in his honor. The name was shortened to Hermanus in the 1900s but winemakers revived the original name as a brand for their wine. Thus, Hermanuspietersfontein Cellars was born.

Hermanuspietersfontein Cellars is the only cellar in South Africa to have Afrikaan wine names and labels – these were done in honor of Hermanus. It is home to various fauna among which are the leopard spoor, reebok, duiker, and baboon. It was also the first wine farm to be awarded Champion Status by the BWI (Biodiversity and Wine Initiative). Its products include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, Shiraz, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Tempramilla, Semillon, Nouvelle, Granache, and Mourv?dre cultivated in separate vineyards, soil types, and slopes.
