It is newly improved having only reopened its doors in mid 2005. The renovations and improvements cost approximately $11.5 million to include the construction of a new terminal and the extension of its current runway to accommodate planes from airline like the Virgin Blue and Jetstar.

The airport is open daily from 6 A.M. until half an hour after the last flight of the day. Some facilities offered by the airport are its Hervey Bay Airport Café where passengers waiting for their flights or arriving to the city can wind down. ATM facilities and internet kiosks are also available for use. Tourist information desks are also available for any inquires such as how to get to Fraser Island and The Sunshine Coast, two very popular attractions in the area.

The airport features nine trips daily to different cities in the country of Australia. The Hervey Bay airport is a gateway to some of the most serene and beautiful areas for backpacking and whale watching.
