Namesake for not only the Hesburgh Library, located on the University of Notre Dame campus in South Bend, Indiana, but the TIAA-CREF’s Hesburgh Award, is the Reverend Theodore Martin Hesburgh. After studying at Notre Dame, Rev. Hesburgh was sent to Italy until his departure was force by the onset of World War II. After earning his Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Catholic University of America in 1945, he went on the serve as the President of Notre Dame for 35 years. Opened in September of 1963 as the Memorial Library, the Hesburgh Library received its new name in 1987. Visitors are welcome to explore the library’s many collections during normal operational hours, which are generally from between 7:30am and 2am Monday through Sunday, with later opening hours on the weekends. Other South Bend attractions include the nearby College Football Hall of Fame, the Northern Indiana Center for History, the Potawatomi Zoo, the City of South Bend Morris Performing Arts Center and the Morris Park Country Club.
