Located in Antwerp in Belgium, Het Eilandje is an island town, named because it was once surrounded by brooks and ditches. Nowadays, the town is surrounded by docks, Scheldt and its old port.
Het Eilandje finds a relevant place in history as an important port of the time and artists of that period depicts cargo ships and docks in various paintings. In the olden days, the cargo ships had to lay anchor a little away from the port, sometimes for weeks at a stretch, until the weather conditions were suitable for docking.
The period between 1490 and 1585 is considered to be the Golden Age in the history of Antwerp and it gained importance as the centre of world economy during that time. There was extensive development between 1519 and 1556 in Het Eilandje and it was initiated by Schoonbeke of Gilbert.
With a sprawling residential area, a Metropolis and increased number of jetties, Het Eilandje became one of the busiest ports in the world.
Today, apart from the olden docks and shipping related areas, there are various stores and shopping outlets. The town people took up the effort to rediscover Het Eilandje which was an isolated area in Antwerp for years.
The developmental activities were aimed at transforming the area to the busy port it once was, with a lot of emphasis given to tourism related areas. With various night clubs, cozy restaurants, places of accommodation and opportunities for sightseeing, this vision has been realised and today Het Eilandje is an important tourist destination in Antwerp.
