Airlie Gardens

Hotels near Airlie Gardens, Wilmington (North Carolina), United States .

Established by a family of wealthy industrialists in 1901 to host parties and entertain guests, Airlie Gardens is a 67-acre public garden along the banks of Bradley Creek in Wilmington, North Carolina. The gardens became the property of New Hanover County in 1999, making them accessible by the public year-round, and comprise one of the last remaining tracts of undeveloped land along Bradley Creek. Originally a 155-acre estate, during the 1920s, Airlie Gardens boasted over 500,000 azaleas and 5,000 camellias, many of which still bloom in today’s gardens.

In addition to the walking trails through formal gardens, views of Bradley Creek, 10-acres of freshwater lakes, and a multitude of wildlife, the centerpiece of Airlie Gardens is the Airlie Oak. The Arlie Oak is a massive oak tree, estimated to be 462 years old, and is set at the end of Arlie Oak Lawn, which includes a floral border, framing the lawn and the tree itself. Airlie Gardens is available to visitors, and is a popular location for weddings and other special events.

Airlie Gardens is located at 300 Arlie Road in Wilmington, North Carolina. The gardens are open Monday through Saturday from 9 A.M. until 5 P.M., with extended hours for the spring bloom, and on-site parking available free of charge to visitors. General admission is $5 for adults, and $3 for children, with admission for special events varying based on the event. Local hotel accommodations include the Landfall Park Hampton Inn and Suites, Residence Inn by Marriott Landfall, Harbor Inn, and the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfair.
