One of Charleston's most famous historic landmarks, The Heyward-Washington House is one of the oldest buildings in town and a huge tourist destination for history and architecture buffs alike. The house, which is operated by The Charleston Museum, has all period furniture and is quite a sight to behold.

Originally built in 1772 by wealthy rice planter Daniel Heyward, the house was intended as a gift for his son Thomas Heyward Junior, who later went on to, among other things, sign The Declaration of Independence. Because of his political involvement, the house was known for housing a fair number of visiting patriots, including George Washington, hence the current popular name.

Open and operating as a museum since the 1930s, each of the house's rooms is done up in furniture and decor from the period. Most of the 18th century furniture had its roots in the Charleston community of furniture makers, and offers visitors a great peek into the craft world of that time, too.

The Heyward-Washington House is open for visitors all week long, from nine until five Monday through Saturday, and then from one until five on Sundays. Tours are possible, which are an even more informative way of learning not just about the history of the house, but also about the history of both Charleston and also of The United States.
