Hietzing

A heavily populated urban area, Hietzing is the 13th district of Vienna, Austria. Apart from the dense residential areas it has large areas containing the Vienna Woods.
Even though it has very little agricultural land, around 72% of the area is covered with vegetation making Hietzing the greenest district in Vienna. Road traffic is very less and hence the city enjoys considerably less amount of pollution.
The oldest written records of the area dates back to the 12th century and until the 16th century, Hietzing was known for being a wine making place. But in 1529 there was a Turkish siege in which it suffered heavy damages. Even though it recovered from it, there was yet another attack in 1683 and the Hietzing was almost deserted.
Later on, in the 18th century, the Schoenbrunn Castle was built which helped the district recover. Even today, this castle is considered to be one of the major tourist attractions in the Hietzing.
In the 18th and 19th century, following the construction of the castle, large number of houses and residential areas came up. It was in 1860 that public transportation facilities were made available.
Hietzing, once an independent municipality of its own, was incorporated as a district of Vienna in the year 1956 before which it was a part of the district Liesing. Apart from the castle, there are various museums, parks, zoo, etc offering opportunities for sightseeing.
