A number of special activities take place in Highland Park each year, including the highly popular Lilac Festival every May. Many different gardens are located throughout the park, with a lily pond that turns into a skating rink during the winter months. There is also a softball diamond, an AIDS Remembrance Garden, and The Lamberton Conservatory, which houses a collection of plants from all corners of the Earth.

A number of special events take place in the evening hours at Highland Park, including open-air theatre during the summer at The Highland Park Bowl. Highland Park is open daily from dawn until dusk. It's possible to make wedding reservations to have weddings in the park, though the waiting list can get very long.
