Hill of Slane

The Hill of Slane is an important and influential site to the north of the village Slane, in County Meath, in Ireland. Steeped in myth and history, it stands 158 metres (520 ft) above the surrounding landscape and has breathtaking views of the countryside.
The importance of the Hill of Slane can be traced back into prehistory, probably as far as the Neolithic, thanks to the many historic sites located around the top of the hill. In ancient Dindshenchas mythology, the Fir Bolg king Sláine was said to have been buried here, in the place called Druim Fuar. Later, in Christian history, the hill became well-known as the place where St. Patrick had lit the first paschal fire in defiance of the pagan kings at nearby Tara.
The hill remained a centre of religion and learning. The ruins of a monastery and college can be seen on the top of the hill. It survived on the Hill of Slane even after successive raids by the Vikings and was restored in 1512.
Among local attractions are the Slane Castle, the Slane Mill, the Slane Bridge and many other historical sites in the area around Slane such as The Brú na Bóinne complex of Neolithic chamber tombs, the Newgrange (a passage tomb built c. 3200 BCE) and the ruins of Fennor Castle.
The Slane village stands on a steep hillside on the left bank of the River Boyne at the intersection of the N2 (Dublin to Monaghan road) and the N51 (Drogheda to Navan road).
