Hill of Ward

The Hill of Ward, an ancient cult site and meeting place also known as Tlachtga, is a hill near Athboy, in County Meath, Ireland.
The place is the site of an Iron Age ringfort, which was in later times associated with the Kings of Mide of and of Munster. It also featured in Irish stories of Tlachtga and her father Mug Ruith, who was said to have ridden his flying machine Roth rámach over it.
The hill was the meeting place of the Aonach, the great Celtic public assembly and Fire Festival that begun on the eve of Samhain, and the place where the Celtic Sun God and Fertility Goddess were celebrated at the year’s end. It is possible that the hill was the centre of ritual activity long before the Celtic period.
From Tara and the other Celtic hill forts, the view from atop the hill is spectacular and the earthworks (which are about 150 metres in diameter) with the remains of an older barrow burial incorporated in them are most impressive.
Other attractions near Navan are the Bective Abbey, Donaghmore (the site of an early monastery) and the church Rathmore with a cross with reliefs of St Lawrence, St Patrick and an abbess.
The Hill of Ward is located 12 miles from the Hill of Tara, just before reaching Athboy. From the church Rathmore take the N51 road.
