The area around Anchorage is known for some of the best skiing in Alaska, and one of the most popular spots for skiers of all ages is Hillberg Ski Area. Just a short drive from Anchorage itself, this ski area has grown and developed from an old lodge and no chairlift into a small ski area that can hold its own against other contemporary resorts.

In addition to the older rope tow that's been around since the resort got its start in the 1950s, there's also a chair lift now. With runs for beginner and advances skiers alike, all members of the family have different trails to suit their needs and skill levels. It's a great place for snowboarders as well, especially for those who are experienced enough to appreciate when the conditions leave the powder a bit more icy, perfect for carving.

Snowboarders also have the option of using a small park to perfect their different tricks, and no matter what you're up to on the hill, the view of Cook Inlet from the top is beautiful at all hours of the day. For those not looking to hit the slopes, there's a tube park, which is a fun way to get out and explore the snow without strapping on boots, skis, and snowboards.

Hillberg Ski Area is open during the winter months for skiers and snowboarders depending on the weather, and if you're not interested in staying in Anchorage and driving up, the lodge provides rooms, as do a few hotels around the area.
