Hiram M Chittenden Locks

Hotels near Hiram M Chittenden Locks, Seattle, United States .

Built in 1911, the Hiram M Chittenden Locks are a complex of locks situated in Salmon Bay, part of Lake Washington’s Shipping Canal in Seattle, Washington. The locks allow boats to move freely between Lake Washington and Puget Sound, while preventing saltwater intrusion into the lake, and maintaining the water level of Lake Washington. The locks are a popular place for visitors and residents alike to watch the parade of varying types of ships headed into and out of the lake and sound.

Especially notable amongst the Hiram M Chittenden Locks is the fish ladder. The ladder was built to allow salmon, which pass freely between salt and fresh water, access to and from Lake Washington and Puget Sound. Occasionally spectators will witness the arrival of a particularly intelligent sea lion, who will take a break next to the exit of the fish ladder, allowing his or her next meal to arrive. The locks are a short walk from the Salmon Bridge, with a number of cafes and restaurants in the immediate vicinity.

The Hiram M Chittenden Locks are located at 3015 Northwest 54th Street in Seattle, with on-site parking available at rates of $1.50 per hour. The grounds are open to visitors daily from 7 A.M. until 9 P.M. Local hotel accommodations include the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Mar Queen Hotel, Mediterranean Inn, and the Hotel Inn at Queen Ann.
