The Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden is a museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art and sculpture. Located in the nation’s capital, at metro L’enfant Plaza Station (the Maryland Avenue exit), the museum was first opened in 1974; it’s named after Joseph H. Hirshhorn, a collector of international renown who donated more than 6,000 paintings and sculptures to the Smithsonian Institute. Hirshhorn immigrated from Latvia to New York at the age of 8; later on he became a philanthropist and financier, which made it possible for him to amass a sizeable art collection. Past exhibitions have included Strange Bodies, Anne Truit, and the Directions series. Collection highlights include Alexander Calder’s Critter with Mobile Top, Alex Katz’s Ada and Vincent in the Car, and Auguste Rodin’s Crouching Woman. Opening hours are 10am to 5:30pm daily. The sculpture garden is open from 7:30 am to dusk. Admission is free. Tours are available.
