For travelers strolling through the streets of Recife's Historic Centre, one of the most interesting parts of the neighborhood is the mix of styles of architecture. Since many different countries had a go at turning the city into their own colony, there is a hodgepodge of architecture styles that are distinctly French, English, Dutch, and Portuguese. Since the city, despite being a metropolis, is still rooted in traditional values, it's not uncommon for many shops in the Historic Centre to shut down after lunch for a siesta period.

Many popular attractions are in the Historic Centre, including the most visited churches, as well as antique stores and galleries. It is also the heart of many Carnaval celebrations. The numerous rivers and islands are the reason that the city is frequently referred to as Brazil's version of Venice.
