Historic Mason Temple

Hotels near Historic Mason Temple, Memphis (Tennessee), United States .

The Historic Mason Temple of Memphis, Tennessee, is perhaps best known for its involvement in one of the most tragic events of American history – it was the place where Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his prophetic I’ve Been to the Mountaintop speech just a day before his assassination. The historical and religious significance of the church, however, goes far beyond its association with the loss of such an important figure.

The Historic Mason Temple was a focal point of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1950s and 1960s. Built in the 1940s as an administrative and spiritual center of the Church of God in Christ, its six buildings quickly became a headquarters for both the religious and the political.

Area visitors are welcomed to visit the church throughout the year, attending a service or simply bearing witness to this significant and beautiful institution. More information can be found at www.cogic.net.
