Historical Museum

Part of Oslo UniversityÕs Museums of Cultural History, the Historical Museum has significant collections of coins, medals, antiquities and artifacts on different ethnologies in the world. It is located in the heart of Oslo, near the Royal Palace.

As an architectural landmark for the city, the Historical Museum represents the Jugend style typical among OsloÕs buildings. Inside is a retrospective of the NorwayÕs cultural heritage, starting with the daunting Antiquities collection tracing the peopleÕs history from prehistoric times to the middle ages. Most noteworthy is the group of relics and items from the Viking period such as headgear, swords and jewelry.

The coins and medal collection is found on the same floor with the Ethnographic exhibitions. The latter provides a richly woven tapestry of how different ethnicities evolved and flourished in their environment. Spotlight is on the indigenous groups from the Polar Regions and the Native Americans. In other floors, there are special sections on African cultures and Asian ethnicities.
