Historical Market Place

The historical Market Place in the city centre of Hildesheim is known as one of the most attractive market places of Germany. It was once considered one of the most beautiful market places in the world. After its destruction in the 1945’s air raid it was reconstructed in 1984-1990 in its former splendour.
The worth mentioning buildings in the square are The Butchers' Guild Hall, The Town Hall, The Tempelhaus and The Wedekindhaus. The Butchers' Guild Hall, known as a beautiful and fine specimen of half-timbered building, houses nowadays a restaurant and the City Museum.
The Town Hall, built in the 13th century in Gothic style, was partly destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt between 1954 and 1989. The Tempelhaus is a late Gothic 15th century patrician house, which today houses the tourist information office. The Wedekindhaus, a 16th century patrician residence, is characterized by its high, carved storeys including their ledges with depictions of allegorical figures.
Other local places of interest are the Thousand Year Old Rosebush, the Cathedral with ancient bronze doors, St. Michaels church (one of the most beautiful early Romanic churches in Germany and a unique example of ottonic architecture), St. Andreas church (the highest church steeple of Lower Saxony), the Museum of the Cathedral and many more.
The nearest airport to Hildesheim is in Hannover. Then take the S-Bahn to Hannover Hbf (main station) and then a train to Hildesheim. The city can also be reached by car, from Autobahn A7, which links Kassel, Göttingen and Hannover, and routes 1, 6, 243 and 494.
