Historical Museum of Krakow [Wieliczka]

Europe's largest salt mining complex, Historical Museum of Krakow in Wieliczka is a testament to the cityÕs salt industry that has thrived in Poland since the Middle Ages. The museum is a cavernous complex featuring nine levels of excavated shafts, covering 300 meters and reaching 327 meters in depth. Wieliczka is part of Krakow Metropolitan area.

These ancient salt mines trace the significance of the historic salt production in Krakow. From the days when it was used to barter for other commodities to the time when it graced the tables of Polish royalty, every grain of Wieliczka salt comes with distinction. The Saltworks Castle, the part of the museum above ground, used to be the managing offices of the mines from the late 13th century until 1945. Today, the restored castle provides exhibitions on Wieliczka and the salt industry through the years.
Amidst the mineshafts are more galleries showing Wieliczka SaltÕs prominence, as seen from the collection of ancient equipment, tools, lighting systems and more artifacts about the manufacturing process itself. Another unique feature of the mines is the presence of two underground churches. Some of the shafts also serve as venue to concerts and other cultural events on occasion.
