Since 1824 the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has held many of the United State’s national historical treasures. Amongst the oldest historical societies in the country, the society itself is an important piece of history. Housed in a City of Philadelphia Register of Historical Places building designed by Addison Hutton, it is also comprised of the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies, added in 2002, and the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, added in 2006. As of 2009 the Historical Society’s museum collection has been sent to the Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia, but continues to house research and collections facilities featuring 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century materials like books and pamphlets, serials and newspapers, manuscripts, graphics, printed ephemera and microforms. In addition the Society is home to the first draft of the U.S. Constitution, and an original printer’s proof of the Declaration of Independence.
