HMP Belfast is also known by its Victorian-era guise, Crumlin Road Gaol. Completed in 1845, it is Northern Ireland's oldest prison facility from the Victorian era and is a source of national pride due to its architectural significance.

Centuries of history resound from its silent walls and decrepit prison cells, having been home to a total of 25,000 prisoners during its existence. It was also the site of many executions until the very last hanging occurred in 1961. Modern-day HMP Belfast served as holding cells for suspected terrorists, as such the likes of famous politicians and IRA personalities were part of the roster of inmates in the last 30 years or so.

Tours around HMP Belfast give an insight into prison life and look further into tales of crime and punishment. Also in the same vicinity, just across the gaol, is Crumlin Road courthouse. Opening times for HMP Belfast are between 10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Sundays.
