A large memorial to Ho Chi Minh, a Vietnamese leader, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is located in the center of Ba Dinh Square which is the place where the Declaration of Independence was read by Ho on September 2, 1945. This established Vietnam as a Democratic Republic.

Construction of the mausoleum began in 1973 and was formally inaugurated in 1975.
