When the Duke of Bavaria Wilhelm V became fed up with the lack of good beer in Munich, he meant business, the brewery business. He decided on September 27, 1589 to begin construction on a brewery. That brewery would become the Hofbräuhaus, or the "ducal brewery".

One of Munich's oldest breweries, the Hofbräuhaus still maintains its rich tradition and history today. The brewery holds the second largest tent at Oktoberfest, offering an institution of Oktoberfest brews from its first in 1810. Hofbräuhaus even survived World War II bombings, which left only a small part of the tap room in working order.

The likes of Austrian royalty and even famous composers like Mozart gulped down a brew at the Hofbräuhaus. Travelers today can follow in those famous footsteps by visiting the Hofbräuhaus on the plaza in Munich. Aside from a brewery, the site also features a gift shop open daily from 11:00AM-2:30 PM. From bags to mugs, guests can find anything labeled Hofbräuhaus here.

Like any good brewery, visitors can also tour the Hofbräuhaus by going to the Hofbräu Visitors Center at Hofbräuallee 1 in eastern Munich's Riem district. Tours are held in German on Tuesdays at 10AM or Thursdays at 10AM or 12:30PM. English speaking tours are also given on Tuesdays and Thursdays by appointment. The visit lasts around an hour to 90 minutes and costs 10 euros a person.

After a few too many of Hofbräuhaus' beers, visitors may need to find a hotel to sober up and get some sleep. Hotels in Munich are plentiful, and cover all price points, from inexpensive to pricy.
