In Vienna, Austria, the Habsburgs still reign as Austria's most famous ruling family. Those wanting a more intimate look at the family can tour the Hofburg Imperial Palace right in the middle of Vienna's most historic area.

The Hofburg Imperial Palace served as the residence of Austrian sovereigns for 600 years. Showing few wrinkles in that time, the Palace covers 240,000 square meters with 18 wings, 19 courtyards, and 2,600 rooms alone. In other words, it maybe the biggest residence most will ever visit.

The Habsburg family reigned in Austria throughout the 13th century as the first rulers of the Austria patrimonial lands, emperors of the Holy Roman Empire in 1452, and lastly the emperors of Austria from 1806 until 1918.

Today, those wanting a closer look at the palace and Habsburg life can tour the Imperial Silver Collection, the Sisi Museum, and 19 rooms of the Imperial Apartments within the Hofburg. The Apartments offer a personal look at Emperor Franz Joseph and wife Elisabeth's private lives.

The Palace is open daily September to June from 9:00AM-5:30-PM. During the busier months of July and August, the Hofburg stays open from 9:00AM-6:00PM. Tickets can be somewhat pricy, as high as 9.90 Euros for an adult ticket. However, that ticket does include an audio guide.

For those that want to see even more, a Sisi Ticket can be purchased at 22.50 Euros an adult. Despite the pronunciation, the Sisi ticket is not for the cowardly or wimpy. The price includes an audio guide for the Schönbrunn Palace tour, the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum, the Imperial Silver Collection, and lastly the Imperial Furniture Exhibit.

The residence still to this day houses some of the most important people in Austrian politics, including the official residence of the President of Austria.
