Hoge Kempen National Park

The Hoge Kempen National Park is located between Genk and Meuse Valley, Belgium. This is the first national park in the Flemish Region of Belgium and stretches over more than 5000 hectares across the municipalities Dilsen-Stokkem, Maasmechelen, Zutendaal, Lanaken, Genk and As.

The area is covered mostly with purple flowering heathland and pine woods. Sand and gravel were extracted, leaving behind large lakes. Visitors can enjoy magnificent views from the 100 meters high “peaks”. The park is home to many animals, some of them very rare and exceptional. Among the special inhabitants are the European beewolf, the antlion and the slippery snake.

There are five locations where visitors can enter the park: Station As in As, Station Pietersheim in Lanaken, Station Mechelse Heide in Maasmechelen, Station Kattevennen in Genk and Station Lieteberg in Zutendaal. These stations are called “Gateways to Hoge Kempen National Park”. The admission to this national park is free for everyone.

For hikers the park has no less than 36 round walks, varying from 3 to 14 kilometers in length, which takes them along the most beautiful spots in and around the Hoge Kempen National Park. From every gateway visitors can buy walking map with all the routes surrounding that location. One of these maps costs only 2 Euros.

The park has also cycling routes which take travelers through the Regional Kempen and Maasland Landscape. Bicycles can be rent at Stations Kattevennen and Pietersheim. A cycling map cost 5 Euros and cam be bought from the gateways or online on the park’s homepage.
