The Hohensalzburg Castle predictably in Salzburg, Austria holds the prime bragging rights of being the biggest fortification in Europe. Built in 1077, the castle has never been conquered, easily seen by its intact structure.

The only major changes the Hohensalzburg Castle has undergone came from 1495-1519 by Archbishop Leonhard Von Keutschach. In a response to the Hungarian Wars, the castle was extended and given its symbol, a lion.

Getting up to the castle from Salzburg may be another adventure. The funicular railway from the downtown runs visitors up to the castle every 10 minutes. Those looking for more exercise and to see a bit more can walk up the road to the castle in about 30 minutes.

Visitors to Salzburg can tour the castle containing a fortress museum. From January through April and for the month of October, the Hohensalzburg is open from 9:30AM-5:00PM. Throughout warmer and more touristy months in May, June and September, the castle extends its hours from 9:00AM-6:00PM. During July the doors are open from 9:00AM-7:00PM.

Admission runs around 9.80 for adults for an all-inclusive package including a ticket up and down on the funicular. Walkers face a reduced entrance fee of 8.60 Euro for using their feet rather than the funicular.
