The Hohenschwangau Castle just outside of Füssen, Germany in Bavaria may not have been the inspiration for a Disney castle, but its magnitude and history are far from uninspiring. Built on the remains of the Schwanstein Fortress, a medieval structure believed to date back to the 12th century, King Maximilian II of Bavaria constructed Hohenschwangau in classic Neo-Gothic style.

It was at the Hohenschwangau that infamous King Ludwig II spent parts of his childhood, before going on to create his dream castle, the Neuschwanstein in 1869. Travelers visiting the Hohenschwangau can easily stop at the nearby Neuschwanstein, the textbook picture of a fairy tale castle.

The Hohenschwangau served as a hunting and summer home to the King of Bavaria. Visitors obtain an expansive picture of the castle, admiring several rooms include the famous Hall of Heroes and Knights. The large hall takes up the entire width of the Castle. The bedrooms of Maximilian II and King Ludwig II are also shown on the tour of the Castle, covered with ornate and intricate paintings on the walls.

Tickets to the Hohenschwangau cost 9 Euros per adult. Visitors that want to see both the nearby Neuschwanstein and the Hohenschwangau on the same day can purchase a Kings Ticket for 17 euros, which includes tours of both castles. Guided tours of the Hohenschwangau last around 35 minutes.

The Hohenschwangau Castle keeps its doors open from April 1-September 30, Monday-Sunday 8:00AM-5:00PM. Throughout October until March 31, the Hohenschwangau shortens its hours Monday-Sunday, 9:00AM-3:30PM.
