Holland Cheese Museum

The famous cheese town of Alkmaar in northern Netherlands takes pride in its heritage, as seen from the exhibitions in the Holland Cheese Museum. Come Friday mornings from April to September, the wonderful scent wafts from the Weighhouse in the heart of the town, as volumes and volumes of cheese are laid out for the traditional market.

The Weighhouse dates back to 1390 and is an important figure in the cheese trade in Alkmaar. The exhibits, open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily except Sundays, share the culture and traditions of cheese making through the centuries. Displays of instruments, paintings, local crafts, machinery and replicas of traditional costumes worn by workers during the 16th century are found inside the museum.
