Akershus Fortress was erected by King Hakon V in the medieval period somewhere around 1290 AD. This castle was constructed in order to defend the city of Oslo from being attacked by Earl Alv Erlingsson of Sarpsborg. The castle has protected the city of Oslo from the Swedish invasion many a times.

In the 17th century, the fortress was restituted by the then King Christian IV. The propinquity of this castle to the sea has provided strategic importance to the navy for most of the trade concerning Norway used to take place via sea during those days. Historically, the castle has never been taken over by any enemy. Only during the World War II the Norwegian government has laid down arms and surrendered to the Germans. This was a site for execution by the Nazis. Also, after the war, the betrayers to the Norwegian government were also executed here.

Even today Akershus Fortress holds a key in the defense of Norway. But it is open to public on all days from 6 AM till 9 PM. The joint headquarter of the Norwegian Ministry of Defense and Defense Staff Norway lies in the eastern part of the Akershus Fortress. The scenic location of the palace has always attracted tourists. Another attractive aspect is the Defense Museum and the Resistance Museum which displays historical artifacts related to the resistance movement during World War II.
