The Holstentor, or Holsten Gate as it is commonly referred, impressively stands in Lübeck, Germany. Gazing up at its dramatic intact structure is sure to get a few "awes" out of every visitor.

The Holstentor may feel a little special. It is the only remaining city gate from the medieval city. It marks the western boundary of Lübeck.

With its brick Gothic construction, the Holstentor has faired better than the other compass-rose placed gates that used to guard the city. The two rounded towers extend towards the sky as people walk under its arched entrance.

Today, visitors to Lübeck can go inside the Hostentor by visiting the Holsten Gate Museum. The Museum showcases a variety of exhibits on the town's early history, urban development and even its shipping industry. Doors remain open April through September from 10:00AM until 5:00PM. From October to March, the museum also opens from 10:00AM until 4:00PM.

The town of Lübeck offers even more than the Holstentor. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern Germany, Lübeck was a part of the Hanseatic League, a trading alliance between Northern European cities. The town has encountered a few blows to its intact medieval structure. World War II bombings left its cathedral in disarray. Hotels in Lübeck run from $100-$200 a night.
