Holt Castle

The Holt Castle just outside of Wrexham, Whales in the town of Holt, may not resemble a castle anymore, but its acclaim can be proved through the castle's extensive history.

Holt Castle dates back to the 13th century when Edward I in 1282 gave the property to John De Warrene, Earl of Surrey. The two collaborated on the castle with completing the Holt Castle around 1311.

Over the years, or rather over the centuries, Holt Castle has bore many different names. Chastellion and Castrun Leonis have all been used to refer to the castle due to the lion sculpture above its gateway.

Unfortunately Holt Castle has suffered many bangs and bruises. Much of the stonework was removed between 1675-1683 for the construction of Eaton Hall just minutes down the road. All of its towers are gone, leaving just a thin wall around the top of the rock. Trees and bushes sprout out from its sides, resembling more of ruins than the magnificence of a medieval castle.

The design of Holt Castle though does hint at its uniqueness. With its five sides, Holt Castle remains an unusual structure to come out of medieval times. Visitors today can walk around its grounds, but bring an imagination. Due to its many blemishes over the years, a waundering mind may be necessary to visualize how impressive Holt was in the 14th century.
