Holten Railway Station

Holten Railway Station, located in Holten, a small village in the province of Overijssel, Netherlands – the surrounding area is very beautiful, and fosters important tourism in the village. The number of local habitants is exceeded by the number of tourists during the summer.

The station was opened on the 1st of September 1886, and it lies on the Deventer-Almelo railway line. Holten Railway Station has direct links to Apeldoorn, Twello, Deventer, Almelo, Hengelo, Enschede. The serivces are operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen. The history of the Holten Railway Station has been quite peaceful so far, except the Second World War period, when the building had to be renovated, due to bombings.

The closest airports to the station are Twente-Ensschede, Weeze, Munster-Osnabruck, Eelde Airports. In the nearby area, cities worth visiting are Rijssen, Markelo, Hellendoorn, Diepenheim, Lochem, Raalte, Deventer, Hengevelde, Almen, Almelo, and Barchem. A must-see around the city is the Holterberg Hill, which is included in the ‘Sallandse Heuvelrug’ National Park. Parts of this National Park are closed during the breeding season of the black grouse (in Dutch – korhoen), as it is the only place in the Netherlands in which this bird can still be found. The village of Holten also houses the second largest World War II cemetery, about 3 kilometres north-east of the railroad station. The cemetery hosts mostly Canadian casualties of war. Visitors may encounter difficulties when heading towards the cemetery by car, as there are only dirt roads leading there.
