It’s hard to believe that Akron Art Museum, housed in a beautiful 20,000 square foot facility today, was located in two borrowed rooms in the basement of a public library when it opened in 1922. Located in Akron, Ohio in the United States, the museum today features art produced since 1850. It hosts visiting shows from national and international collections as well. Despite its humble beginnings as an under-funded school and center for art, the Akron Art Museum has grown into a large and lucrative institution.

The Akron Art Museum is split into two collections – one ranging from 1850 to 1950 and the other ranging from 1950 to the current day. A number of artists are featured in these collections, including Andy Warhol, Elijah Pierce and Childe Hassam. Abstract art and installations are also displayed.

The Akron Art Museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, with special long hours on Thursdays extending to 9:00 pm. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Admission prices are low - $7 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens, and $6 for adults with tours (information valid 9/17/2009). Students on tours, children under 12 and members of the museum are admitted free of charge. Those visiting from far away have lots of hotel and resort options available in the area, including the Hampton Inn and the Radisson.
