Hong Kong Island is located at the southern end of Hong Kong. It is an island with an estimated population of 1.2 million people according to the 2008 census. When the island was first occupied by the British in 1842 its inhabitants were approximately just 3,000 people.

The island was given to the British after the First Opium War in which China lost and was forced to sign the Convention of Chuenpeh. In 1842, the Treaty of Nanking was signed and the island then became an official British colony in the Far East.

Hong Kong Island is the second largest territory in Hong Kong after the Lantau Island. It is the first and initial site of colonization of the British. The first city to be built here was Victoria City. It is the main political and commercial area of Hong Kong.

The island is also referred to most of the time as Island Side or Hong Kong side. Famous sights and attractions on the island are the The Peak, Ocean Park, the Landmark, Times Square, Tung Choi Street and the Hong Kong Financial Centre.

The districts found in the island include the Wan Chai District, Central and Western District, Eastern District and the Southern District. Hotels in the area are the Cosmo Hotel, Cosmopolitan Hotel Hong Kong, Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers, Prudential Hotel and The City Garden Hotel.
