Primarily built as a mitigation area for the lost wetlands in Tin Shui Wai, the Hong Kong wetland has become a major tourism and educational attraction in Tin Shui, Yuen Long. It was in 1998 when the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department and the Hong Kong Tourism Board decided to set up the International Wetland Park and Visitor Centre Feasibility Study and make the Hong Kong Wetland Park as a sanctuary for a vast array of species at the same time make it as an ecotourism spot.

The combination of natural and man-made environment makes everybody experience nature at its best. Though some habitats of species in the parts are manmade, they are still exposed to natural elements especially among water fowls and birds. There is the Wetland Interactive World composed of galleries, exhibits, shops, an indoor play area wherein visitors can actually hold the species with the supervision of the park’s personnel. Outside the Interactive World are other facilities like the Stream Walk, Mangrove Boardwalk and Bird Hides where visitors can get a closer look with the species natural habitat.

The Hongkong Wetland Park is open from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays to Sundays. Each group of visitor is allowed three-four hours or half day tour in the park. Entrance fee for the Hong Kong Wetland Park ranges from $0-$5. The park is glad to declare that children under three years old have no entrance fee.
