Horologion of Andronikos

Hotels near Horologion of Andronikos, Athens, Greece .

Much of present technology, government, and culture can be attributed to the inspirations and ideas of the Greeks. The weathervane is just one of those inventions, first placed atop the Horologion of Andronikos in Athens, Greece.

The Horologion of Andronikos can also be referred to as the Tour of the Winds due to the 8 directional winds carved on the 8 sides of the octagonal shaped building. The Tour of the Winds parks itself east of the Roman Agora, near the Acropolis in the Athens ancient marketplace.

As most archaeologists conclude, its origins stretch back to the mid second century B.C. Famous Macedonian astronomer Andronikos of Kyrrhos designed the Horologion of Andronkios to feature a water clock on the inside, a sundial on the outside, and a weather vane embodied in the Greek god Triton on the top. The building showed sundials, mechanical hour indicators, and even a calendar system.

The Tour of the Winds' design represents a Doric interior with a Corinthian exterior. With its 8 sides, the Horologion of Andronikos stands out amongst the ruins of Athens. Its marble structure stands 42 feet high.

Those that want to spend more time around the Horologion of Andronikos can stay the night in one of Athens' many hotels. Parts of Athens however are known to be rough, so selecting a more expensive hotel in a better area may be worth the extra euros.
