Hospices Civils de Beaune

Hotels near Hospices Civils de Beaune, Beaune, France .

Not many hospitals can brag of treating patients since the middle ages. However, the Hospices Civils de Beaune in Beaune, France proudly notes its long time medicinal history.

The Hospices Civils de Beaune was founded on August 4, 1443 back When Duke Philip the Good ruled the region of Burgundy. This came during tumultuous times for Beaune. Following the Hundred Years War, the majority of Beaune's people were utterly penniless.

The Duke's Chancellor, Nicolas Rolin and his wife Guigone de Salins made the humane decision to create the hospital and refuge for the poor townspeople.

Today the site still functions, even featuring a museum open everyday. The Hospices Civils de Beaune houses remarkable architecture, enough to make the sick feel better just by gazing at the building's bright multicolored roofs. The building has even become a symbol of the Burgundy region.

Aside from just being a hospital, Hospices Civils de Beaune owns its own wine producing estate, some 152 acres of vineyards funded by donations. Winos can bid on the auctioned off wines of the Hospices de Beaune every year on the third Sunday of November.
